I've Got LinkedIn On The Brain

I've got LinkedIn on my mind y'all! Recently, I've been learning how to amplify my own LinkedIn profile and represent my brand on the platform. As a Career Empowerment & Leadership Coach, I get to work with clients to make their LinkedIn profiles more robust and I share tools on how to maximize the networking opportunities there. I'm always pleasantly surprised when I can share a tip that a client wasn't previously aware of and help improve their presence on the platform.

LinkedIn is more than just a social platform - different than IG, TikTok, and FB - it's a powerful tool for professional networking, for personal branding, and for career advancement. Whether you're actively seeking new opportunities or simply looking to expand your network, optimizing your LinkedIn profile can make a significant impact. I wanted to share the wealth and share some tips to help you maximize your presence on LinkedIn.

🖼️ Update Your Profile Picture and Background Photo

Your profile picture should be a recent image that represents you well. Ideally, it should be taken within the last 10 years. Your profile photo doesn't have to be professionally taken, but you should make sure that it's only your face (versus a group shot).

Your profile has a cover photo too! I recommend you choose a background photo that resonates with you - whether it represents something personal, your company, and/or your values and something important to you. The cover photo is a great way to express your identity and make your profile stand out in a unique way.

📣 Craft a Compelling Headline

Your LinkedIn headline should reflect the job you aspire to have and/or the essence of the work you do. Avoid using your current job title if it doesn't align with your long-term goals, unless you're in a role like sales where your company affiliation is key. An important thing to note here is that LinkedIn is about representing yourself, not just your current employer. 👍

💎 Make Your 'About Me' Section Engaging

The 'About Me' section is your opportunity to showcase who you are as a professional and as a person. Consider using your professional summary from your resume, but make it more engaging (and make sure it's in complete sentences). Highlight your personality, your professional passions, and any relevant assessments or skills. This section should give visitors a clear sense of what drives you and what you bring to the table.

📌 Keep Your Employment History Accurate

This is a pretty easy one but you want to make sure that your employment history is up-to-date and that it accurately reflects your experience. Because I know you're keeping your resume updated 😜, the easiest way to handle this is to simply transpose the bullet points from your resume to maintain consistency. In addition to that, what are the accomplishments and results that may not have fit in your resume? Add them here! This makes it easier for potential employers or connections to understand your career journey.

🗺️ Expand and Engage With Your Network

Regularly review and expand your connections. LinkedIn is a networking platform and networking is so powerful! You never know how the people you know may introduce you to other people and open the door to a ton of opportunities and possibilities! Also, be intentional with who you choose to connect with.

I would recommend engaging with your network by posting at least once a month. You can do this by sharing interesting articles along with a brief blurb on your thoughts your thoughts. You should also start following organizations or influencers who align with your values. Engagement is key to staying visible and relevant within your network.

🔗 Customize Your URL

Make your LinkedIn URL as short and memorable as possible, ideally using just your first and last name. A clean, personalized URL looks more professional and is easier to share, including putting it on your resume.

👋 Leverage the Recommendation Section

The Recommendations section can be another powerful tool to enhance your profile. Reach out to current or former colleagues who can speak to your skills and work ethic and ask if they'd write you a recommendation of your time working together. A well-written recommendation can boost your credibility and make your profile stand out to potential employers or collaborators. It's also  fun to be recognized for all your hard work and your value add!

By taking these steps, you can make your LinkedIn profile shine 💫, and be use it as a dynamic and effective networking tool. Whether you're looking to make a career move or simply want to strengthen your professional connections, LinkedIn offers countless opportunities to showcase your skills and connect. So, take a moment to update your profile and start leveraging the full power of LinkedIn today!
