April showers... reminds me of a perfect time for fresh starts and new beginnings You š»
Ā
I still remember the first time I asked for a raise. It was 2011, and the thought of that conversation made my stomach churn and my palms sweat. I rehearsed what I was going to say about a hundred times, tweaking it to get my message and ask across clearly. It was scary AF to think about... but eventually, I took a deep breath, walked into the meeting, and made the ask. And guess what? I got something! š
I didn't necessarily realize it in the moment, but that one moment changed everything for me.
Ā
Over the course of my 14-year career, Iāve moved around quite a bitāeach step being intentional. Iāve interviewed extensively, negotiated salaries, and even turned down job offers that didnāt align with what I wanted and knew I deserved. Iāve asked for promotions, sought external opportunities when internal growth wasnāt available, and I've taken control of my career instead of waiting for someone else to decide my next step. š
Ā
Iām not here to say my path is for everyone. But I do believe that we should not continue to sit in roles that donāt fulfill us. AND I am passionate about seeing women advocate for themselves! š
Ā
Why do we stay too long? One of the biggest issues is that women are more likely to remain in unfulfilling or limiting work environments than men. According to Harvard Business Review, women are 1.5x more likely than men to stay in a job despite being unhappy. This is due to things like feelings of loyalty, fear of change and rejection, or the belief that things will eventually improve if they wait.
Ā
So how do we break this cycle?
šSupport other women ā One of the best ways to create change is to uplift and empower each other. Advocate for your colleagues' promotions, acknowledge their work, and stand together.
šSpeak up and stand up for yourself ā If you donāt advocate for yourself, who else will? So - ask for that raise, push for that promotion, and claim the respect you deserve!
šFind a community that empowers you ā You donāt have to figure this out alone. Surrounding yourself with women who are navigating the same challenges can make all the difference.Ā
ā Introducing Advocate & Elevate coaching group! ā¬ļø
